This Might Shock You

Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men?  I'll bet that nosey neighbor across the street does.  Dang but don't you hate nosey neighbors?  They've got that holier than thou attitude; that I'm going to tattle on you and spoil your fun arrogance that roils everyone. I know just the type.  A buddy of mine lived in a neighborhood with a spinster of a nosey neighbor.  She recorded when people came and went; what car they drove; what they wore; who they talked to.  Really, over the top.  Everyone hated her.  At least, everyone did hate her until that one time her nosy-ness actually paid off for everyone. So, as the story goes, a new couple moved into the neighborhood.  Guy was in his mid-30's and lady was about the same age.  Nice looking couple.  People you'd want living next to you.  Because they never talked to nosey neightbor, she immediately got suspicious and started recording everything the did.   See, I kn...

This Is Still A Thing?!

Gambar
You know what blows my mind (well, this week, anyway)?  It's the fact that there are still employers out in employment land that can't tell the difference between discrimination and non-discrimination.  I mean, really!  With all the litigation flying around, you'd think employers would know what not to do these days. Take, for example, the Lady who came up to me the other day.  Seems she is very religious and has been so all her life.   Her boss and fellow employees were not of her religious persuasion.  It seems that for the last several months, her coworkers have been discriminating against her because of her religious beliefs .   Both employer and employees have been berating her with anti-religious propaganda and literature and, have engaged in a pattern of "hostile proselytizing" to the point where she no longer feels safe going to work. Maybe you're thinking "hostile proselytizing?"  What the heck is that!?!  Wel...

The Little Guy

Gambar
When people look at me today, they see a 6'5" giant of a man.  Confident, strong, and the life of the party. When I was a kid, that wasn't so much the case.  Heck, when I was a kid, I got beaten up all the time (which was probably why I eventually got into law). I remember this one group.  They thought they were the cock of the walk and would shake kids down for their lunch money. No kid dared to tattle on them because, as we learn from television and government in general, people who tattle end up wearing cement shoes.  So, the rein of terror continued.   One day, I was playing marbles with a friend and this group of thugs came over and started pushing him around. Honestly, I don't know what came over me because I stepped my 60 pound, 4 foot nothing frame between the bully and my friend and told them to push off .   You'd have thought an atomic bomb went off because the entire playground froze.   Kids hundreds of yards away felt a disturban...

To Catch A Rat

Gambar
For whatever reason, this year has been the year of the rat at my house. No, I'm not talking about the Chinese Calendar .  I'm talking about the #$@#@$ rats that I've been trapping in my attic. Really been a pain in my backside but you gotta go get 'em before they start to multiply and/or gnaw on wires and things. As I was preparing to catch another rat (OK, we've only trapped two so far, but that last one was HUGE), I got to thinking about law and legal research.  Specifically, I was thinking about how I go about getting prepared to do a research project.  For instance, when I'm trapping rats, I start by setting up the ladder (to get to the attic), Then pull on my lightweight pants,  Strap on my knee pads (to crawl on the studs),  Slip on my dust mask,  Put on my 1,200 lumen headlamp,  Put on my glasses, Put on my lucky Cubs baseball cap and, finally,  Slide on my heavy-duty gloves and up into the attic and go a-hunting When I'm ...

What Was He Thinking?!

Gambar
Don't know if you know but I'm married to a most beautiful woman, have kids, have a mortgage, bills to pay, places that I want to go, things I want to do, people I want to annoy. Because of all this, I try not to put myself in situations that are going to get me killed (any time soon).  OK, yes - I work in a stressful environment where, at any time, someone could (and have) just flipped out.  But, besides, that, you don't see me bungee jumping into a hornet's nest just because it's there. This was the thought that was going through my mind the other day when I was reading about some guy that got killed/murdered.  Seems he was standing outside his home at 3am arguing with some drunk guy.  First, if you don't work the night shift, why are you not in bed dreaming about unicorns and rainbows?  Second, if you're going to be outside your home at 3am, have the good sense NOT to argue with drunk people! Seems this guy didn't follow my sense of logic a...

It's All About The Money

Gambar
Today's blog is more a commentary on greed than anything else.  In and of itself, greed is good .  Notwithstanding what the left says, greed encourages innovation and development.  Of course, greed also leads to other things - like selfishness (which is pretty much what happens when people get to thinking life is more about them then it is about helping others). Take, for instance, the GMC Gremlin , but it was pretty big).  Thing was, it got good gas mileage for a car in the 70's.  The duduk kasus was that if you were ever involved in a rear-end collision, you were toast . Literally.  About 27 people were killed in similar accidents and, it turns out, Ford factored the liability into its financials by creating a trust fund in anticipation of future litigation . Ford knew the Pinto's gas tank was a defective design but sold them anyway because they figured they'd make more money selling Pintos then they'd lose in litigation .  In the end, it was ...
